有人問過老羅, 他曾經演奏過 Elgar 大提琴協奏曲,
可是, 為什麼後來不再演奏這首作品了?


老羅很概略回答:

I stayed away from the Elgar because I think of that piece as somewhat naïve.
The theme from the slow movement sounds like it's about first love,
so I think it's more appropriate for a young person.

My pupil Jacqueline du Pré played it much better than I because
I didn't have the fresh perspective that a piece like that requires.
After playing Don Quixote, the Shostakovich concertos, and other works,
it was hard for me to go back to a piece like the Elgar.




我猜老羅可能是感到 "曾經滄海難為水" 啦, 呵呵,
尤其出了 du Pre 青春無敵的演奏之後
我偶爾翻到很久以前讀的某些文學作品,
也有類似感慨


有趣的是, 這首大提琴協奏曲是 Elgar 晚年的作品,
大家多半以為這首作品傾向深思與傷逝, 老羅卻持相反意見,
而我自己弄來弄去, 最讓我起疑的是那 e 小調音階...


會不會太直白了?!
有點像是老人家從懷舊之情當中突然暴衝

Tortelier 講了半天, 沒有直接點到我的疑點,
不過, 他舉幾種音階來比喻性格與思想, 倒是畫龍點睛,
頓時, Elgar 老人家的英國脾氣顯露無遺,
不知道老羅是不是受不了這個?

Tortelier 添上一句 Scales are the food of music.


哈哈, We are what we eat.
吃了甚麼, 講出甚麼, 脫不了干係
看吧, 早就說過要好好練習音階,
不然啊, 亂吃不僅弄壞身體,
真的吃到美食了, 也無福消受
